The 740i is a luxury saloon with a refined and powerful engine. The only downside is that the suspension is not as good as it should be for the price and the ride can feel a bit bumpy.

The Beemer has loads of space and is finished to a very high standard, the cabin coming kitted out with loads of equipment, including satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard.

PROS:  Good looks, impressive power, luxurious interior

CONS:  A diesel engine makes much more sense in a car like this

Behind the Wheel

The 740i has a 3.0-litre stright-six developing 326bhp and 332lb-ft of torque at 1500-4500rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds with a limited top speed of 155mph.

The 7 Series is a great car to drive and the engine is powerful, smooth and refined. However, the suspension is not perfect and the ride can feel a little unsettled.

The 7 Series is a noisier saloon than some of its rivals, as there is some wind and outside road noise that penetrate.

Looks & Equipment

The 7 Series' cabin is made with high-quality materials and is beautifully finished.

The 740i comes with leather seats, metallic paint, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard. The iDrive system is much easier to get to grips with than before and all the controls of angled towards the driver.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The 740i should be very safe with standard safety equipment including eight airbags, Dynamic Stability Control inclusive of ABS, corning brake control, dynamic break control and dynamic traction control. The 7 Series also comes with an alarm, deadlocks and an engine immobiliser as standard.

BMW have an impressive reputation for reliability and the 7 Series should be a very reliable car indeed.

The 7 Series saloon is spacious in the front and back, with a sizeable, although narrow, boot offering 500 litres of space.

Value for Money

The 740i costs £61,225, making it the cheapest 7 Series on the market. However, the car will not be cheap to run thanks to poor fuel economy - 28.5mpg on the combined cycle - and CO2 emissions of 232g/km, putting the Beemer into VED band L.

The diesel-powered 740d makes much more sense. It is very nearly as fast as the 740i but will do over 40mpg.

BMWs generally hold their value well, but all luxury limos tend to lose their value quite quickly and this is the case more than ever with rising fuel prices.
