Audi A1 Car Reviews

The Audi A1 was designed to compete with the Mini and Alfa Romeo Mito, and is aimed at a young affluent market. This small family car does that well, and is testament to the reputation that Audi has built for itself, and despite being the cheapest available Audi, nothing about this car appears to be budget.

Audi A1 Overview

The A1 is available with three turbo engines – 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol units and a 1.6 litre diesel. All give punchy performance with the diesel offering the best fuel efficiency, although all have an extended top gear, in an attempt to keep revs down and fuel efficiency up. The engines stop-start technology also helps reduce fuel consumption and keeps carbon dioxide emissions low.

There are three trim levels, which offer stiffer suspension and larger wheels. The S Line model can make the ride a little uncomfortable on bumpy roads. The stiffer suspension does help the handling however, which is fun and agile through corners.

The interior is well designed as you would expect from any modern Audi, with a central control unit, which is easy to get used to and gives access to many of the cars functions. The seats are firm and supportive, and easily adjustable to suit any driving position. Space inside isn’t the most generous in the back, due in part to the sloping roof, however there is a larger boot than many other vehicles in the class.

Background

The A1 was introduced in 2010, reaching the UK in November of that year. It is built on the same platform as the Seat Ibiza and VW Polo, the Volkswagen Group PQ25 platform. Originally released as a 3-door hatchback, there is now a 5-door sportback variant that provides greater flexibility and practicality.

The A1 was previewed as the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept car in 2007, at the Tokyo Motor Show. The A1 Sportback was a variation of this concept car, featuring 5 doors, unveiled in 2008 at the Paris Motor Show. Both these concept models featured hybrid engines, but eventually became the A1 models on sale today.

Summary

The A1 is a small family car that is at home in cities, and rivals the likes of the Mini and other premium car of this size, such as the Alfa Romeo Mito or the Citroen DS3. It is highly revered and received What Car? Magazine’s ‘Car of the Year 2011’ award, as well as a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2010.
