The hydrogen fuel cell powered Toyota Mirai, which will enter the UK market in limited numbers later this year, has set a zero-emissions driving range record.

While undergoing tests in the USA ahead of its launch in California this summer, the new Mirai achieved a combined 67mpg while covering an estimated 312 miles on a single tank. As a result of the test, the Mirai is the only zero emissions electric vehicle on the US market officially rated by the Environmental Protection Agency as capable of travelling more than 300 miles on one fill.

“Toyota realised in the early 90s that electrification was key to the future of the automobile,” said Toyota’s North American CEO , Jim Lentz.

“Just as Prius introduced hybrid-electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly 20 years ago, Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation.”

The four-door saloon Mirai is heralded by the manufacturer as the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, running on electricity produced by a combination of hydrogen fuel and oxygen, a process in which water vapour is the only resulting emission.
