Volkswagen have confirmed their Motorsport division is working on a 325bhp racing version of the seventh-generation Golf.

Two example of the Touring Car Racer International (TCR) spec Golf will take part in this weekend’s TCR series eighth round at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, as Volkswagen considers a customer racing programme for next season.

The racer boasts 18-inch rims and 40cm more chassis width.  An aerodynamically designed front splitter and carbon rear wing boost handling, while a racing seat with head protectors, racing safety cell, and a safety tank ensure the car meets FIA regulations. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged power plant is connected to a paddle-shift operated DSG gearbox.

Volkswagen have been able to call on the experience their stable mates at SEAT developed when creating the Leon Cup Racer.

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito said: “When developing the Golf-based concept car, we are able to fall back on the resources at Volkswagen.  This reduces both development time and costs.  We will also use the rest of the season to test the car under competitive conditions and evaluate a possible customer racing project from 2016.”
