Volvo’s new XC90, which is set to be launched in two weeks’ time in Stockholm, will be the first car in Volvo’s line-up to be built on the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).
This might not sound particularly exciting, but the SPA platform will ultimately underpin every single model in Volvo’s range. And, although it sounds like a cure for insomnia, it’s actually pretty interesting.
The SPA is a modular platform, which means that it’s incredibly configurable. Theoretically, Volvo could build everything from SUVs to saloons and coupes on the architecture, which will allow them to build multiple cars on a single production line.
Volvo will also be able to slot in pretty much any engine it likes, from diesel and petrol powerplants to hybrid drivetrains and pure electric motors. A new supercharged ‘twin-engine’ version has also been mooted.
High-strength steel will form the basis of the SPA, making the new XC90 not only lighter but also stronger and safer than its predecessor.
The XC90 will be unveiled to the public following its Stockholm unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in October.
