Volvo have set themselves an ambitious target of selling a million electric-powered cars by 2025.

As part of this plan the Swedish carmaker will offer at least two hybrid versions in each model range, and will introduce its first all electric car within the next three years. Over the past five years the company has introduced new vehicle architecture which allowed for the incorporation of hybrid technology.

“It is a deliberately ambitious target,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “It is going to be a challenge, but Volvo wants to be at the forefront of this shift to electrification.”

The move towards electrification has come as part of a new strategic sustainability programme for the company, which will affect all areas of the business.  Volvo aim for the business to be climate-neutral by 2025, while it has also set itself two ambitious targets to achieve by 2020 – for 35% of the top jobs in the company to be held by women, and for zero deaths or serious injuries in new Volvo cars.
