Vauxhall have made a new addition to their Astra range which they are aiming directly at their competitors from VW and Ford.

Available from today, the new Vauxhall Astra ES Tech is a 5-door hatch fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox and either a 138bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, or a 123bhp diesel powered 1.7-litre CDTi engine.

The Vauxhall Astra ES Tech comes as standard with satnav, CD player with DAB radio, MP3, USB, iPod control, Bluetooth, 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioining, curtain airbags, electronic stability programme, daytime running lights, cruise control and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.  Vauxhall are hoping that it is this list of standard equipment that will give the new model the edge over its competitors.

"The new ES Tech models now raise the bar for value and equipment levels in the class and should make buyers think twice before putting their hard-earned cash down on a Ford or VW," said Vauxhall's Managing Director Duncan Aldred, before adding a note of caution, "Competition is fierce, so the Astra needs to deliver."

The 1.4-litre petrol ES Tech goes from 0-60mph in 9 seconds, and to a top speed of 126mph. It returns a combined figure of 47.9mpg, and emits 138g/km of CO2. The diesel option is slightly less athletic, reaching 60mph after 10.7 seconds and a maximum of 122mph, but makes up for it with a combined economy figures of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 119g/km with its Vauxhall ecoFLEX technology.

Both Vauxhall Astra ES Tech models are available to order from today with prices starting from £18,110.
