Volvo have announced plans to conduct what it claims will be the most ambitious autonomous driving trial ever seen in the UK.

The Swedish carmaker says the trails, due to take place next year, will speed up the introduction of new technology, massively reduce car accidents, and free up congested roads. Called ‘Drive me London’, the announcement of the new trial comes hot on the heels of a commitment given by the manufacturer that it aims for no one to be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo by the year 2020. Using real families using autonomous driving (AD) cars, the trial will source data to be used in developing technology suitable for real-world driving conditions.

Volvo has cited independent research which shows AD technology could reduce car accidents by up to 30%.

"Autonomous driving represents a leap forward in car safety," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. "The sooner AD cars are on the roads, the sooner lives will start being saved.  There are multiple benefits to AD cars, that is why governments globally need to put in place the legislation and infrastructure to allow AD cars onto the streets as soon as possible. The car industry cannot do it all by itself. We need governmental help."
