The UK new car market has continued to grow for a 29th consecutive month, new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed.

172,907 cars were registered in July, a 6.6 per cent increase on the same period in 2013, while renewed economic confidence and attractive finance deals have driven the market up by 10.1 per cent year-to-date, compared to last year’s figures.

The strong performance of the market has led the SMMT to revise its forecast for 2014 up to 2.45 million cars.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: "The continued positivity has led to an uplift in the SMMT full year forecast to 2.45 million passenger car registrations, a rise of 8.1%. However, the more moderate growth of the last three months shows that overall demand is beginning to stabilise."

The perennially popular Ford Fiesta remained Britain’s best-selling car in July, shifting 8,854 units. The Ford Focus came in second with 6,013 sales, with the Vauxhall Corsa rounding off the top three with 5,467. The VW Golf was in fourth, followed by the Nissan Qashqai in fifth, the Vauxhall Astra in sixth, the Audi A3 in seventh and the Fiat 500 in eight. The BMW 3 Series and the MINI rounded off the top ten.
