The first nine months of this year have been the most successful for UK car manufacturing since 2008, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The UK car manufacturing has produced 1,132,017 units this year to date, a slight increase of 0.6 per cent.  However, particularly pleasing are the number of vehicles for the home market, which leapt by 17.7 per cent in September, an indication that the resurgence of the UK new car market is continuing.

Even the fact that overall September output fell by 2.8 per cent to 137,068 did little to dampen the SMMT’s enthusiasm, with the drop attributed to planned re-tooling for upcoming model changes.

"It is testament to the strength of the automotive industry that it continues to break records - yielding the best year-to-date performance for six years and comfortably surpassing one million units," said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. "The continued investment by the sector into new models means the September figures took a slight dip as some plants underwent re-tooling but it is these same new models which will help increase production volumes in the future".
