Detroit Electric have put the finishing touches on the styling of its new SP:01 pure electric two-seater sports car, the SP:01, ahead of its global sales launch in 2015.
The brand was resurrected by former Lotus Engineering Group CEO Albert Lam, and although the company is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, the groundbreaking SP:01 will be manufactured this side of the Atlantic in Leamington Spa. Developed from a prototype unveiled at last year’s Shanghai Motor Show, the SP:01 is on course to become the world’s fastest production electric sports car.
Out go the rear flying buttresses from the prototype, replaced by a striking fastback design, with a large rear wing and downforce-enhancing under-body diffuser also added. The aerodynamic performance of the SP:01 has been optimised by a process called computational fluid dynamics, a technique utilised by design chief Jerry Chung and his team during the development of the car.
“The final design of SP:01 incorporates signature Detroit Electric design DNA, carried over from the prototype model we revealed last year. Coupled with many motorsport visual cues, the new fastback design, bold face and sharp contours evoke the company’s vision of pure electric performance”, said Chung.
The SP:01’s electric motor, powered by battery packs which are clad in a composite casing to protect them in the event of an accident and which also adds to the cars torsional rigidity, will propel the car to a top speed of 155mph, and from 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds.
The SP:01 will go into production at Detroit Electric’s new UK facility later this year.
