With the clocks due to go back this weekend, a new survey has revealed the extent of the anxiety felt by many using car parks on darker evenings.

Conducted by parking marketplace YourParkingSpace.co.uk, the research found that almost 40% of UK motorists have felt unsafe while in a car park, a place where official AA figures show a fifth of car crime occurs. Over half of female drivers admitted concerns, with nearly a quarter citing safety and security as the most important factor when choosing where to park.

“This time of year, when the clocks go back, is unfortunately a time that tends to see an increase in vehicle crime and burglary as criminals take advantage of the darker nights” said YourParkingSpace.co.uk managing director Harrison Woods.

“Not all car parks are dark and sinister places, in fact far from it, but taking a few precautionary steps can significantly reduce the risk of parking related crime as well as reduce the worry of being a victim in the first place,” said Mr Woods who offered the following tips to motorists: Park somewhere that is well lit, as increased lighting levels can reduce the fear of crime and deter criminals.

If you can, park somewhere covered by CCTV or security personnel, and look for car parks displaying the Safer Parking Scheme’s ‘Park Mark’ sign, a full list of which can be found at www.parkmark.co.uk

Find somewhere to park in advance if possible, and familiarise yourself with the area to save driving around looking for a space in the dark.

Lock all items out of sight in the boot - even an old coat may be enough to tempt an opportunist thief – and take all valuables with you, including any personal correspondence.

Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings when walking to and from your car, and keep your keys to hand so that you’re not stood searching for them by your car when you return.  Never leave your keys in the ignition, as although you may be tempted to do so while you warm your car up or de-ice it is an open invitation to opportunistic car thieves.

Finally, don’t be afraid to report safety concerns to the car park security or management, and if your car has been broken into inform the police immediately.
