This is the new Smart Fourjoy concept, a compact all-electric four-seater concept which is rumoured to preview next year's new Smart ForFour.
It takes a bit of effort to remember the Smart ForFour now. Launched back in 2004, it was Smart's attempt to crack the five-door hatchback market. Unfortunately for Smart, it was a catastrophic flop and was quietly dropped from the price lists just two years later.
So, will the new ForFour succeed where its predecessor failed?
On the evidence shown by the Fourjoy concept, it's hard to tell. Although the Fourjoy does give us an idea of how large the ForFour will be (about the same size as a Suzuki Alto), it seems likely that Smart will add some doors, a roof and a bootlid before it goes on sale in 2014. The Fourjoy can therefore only be seen as a rough idea of how the ForFour will look.
Powered by the same rear-mounted electric motor you get in existing Fortwo electric drive, the Fourjoy develops 55kW (74bhp) and is fitted with a 17.7kWh lithium-ion battery. Smart has yet to release any info on the Fourjoy's performance and range.
Apart from that it's all pretty standard Smart car stuff. The car gets the Smart's signature tridion safety cell, small overhangs and tight turning circle. It also, like most Smarts, gets a fairly terrible name. Fourjoy? Really? Then again, we suppose it's an improvement on the ridiculously-monikered -- and, incidentally, hideous -- Forjeremy concept we saw last year.
We'll have to wait until the Frankfurt Motor Show until we can see the car in the metal.
