Battery technology has had its cynics and critics but after five years has shown itself to be reliable and sustainable.

The all electric Nissan Leaf has sold 35,000 models in Europe in the five years since its conception and on a global scale has shifted 165,000 units. They are now proud to say that only 0.01% of their batteries have failed; this represents only three batteries in total.

As an average across the automotive industry, the 99.99% battery success rate makes electric technology more reliable than both petrol and diesel engines in statistics gathered from across the European market.

Electric vehicle advocate and presenter of online TV channel Fully Charged, Robert Llewellyn commented: “This comes as no surprise. There was a lot of apprehension about electric technology in the beginning, but with sales climbing month-on-month I struggle to see how these myths continue to be regurgitated today.”

In 2014, the Nissan Leaf saw a boost in sales of 33% on top of the sales from 2013 and took more than a quarter of the total sales across the electric car market. It is the best ever selling electric vehicle and is said to be 40% cheaper to maintain than equivalent petrol or diesel cars.
