Ferrari has announced their most potent retractable hard top, mid-rear-engined V8 model to date – the Ferrari 488 Spider.
The turbocharged V8-powered aluminium spaceframe 488 Spider will first be seen in the flesh at September’s Frankfurt International Motor Show, but as you can see, images of the new model are now available for the general public to drool over.
The 488 Spider will share the same 660bhp, 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 power plant which was first introduced a few months ago in the 488 GTB, and which gives the new model a 0-62mph time of three seconds flat.
Aerodynamic developments such as a blown spoiler and underbody-mounted vortex generators ensure the 488 Spider boasts optimal downforce while at the same time reducing drag. The electric glass rear wind stop can be set to three different positions, aiding comfort when the top is lowered. Despite the retractable hard top folding flush onto the engine compartment in two overlapping sections, the design of the 488 Spider ensures the model boasts the same tortional rigidity found in the 488 GTB coupe.
Throttle response times, and acceleration out of corners, are better than any of the 488 Spider’s predecessors, something the manufacturer attributes to honing the design using a Formula One style simulator. Also inspired by the Prancing Horse’s racing exploits is the 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission.
There are no clues at this time as to what price tag the 488 Spider will wear upon release.
