Technology which monitors a new drivers road habits is offering a chance for young people to lower their premiums and many of them are taking up that offer.

Latest figures show that there has been a 62% rise in the number of teenagers choosing to use telematic devices which use GPS to monitor where and when the car is used as well as an accelerometer to measure their speed.

There has been widespread opposition to the suggestion that the EU could legislate to make these sorts of devices compulsory; 71.5% say they would be strongly against such measures and see it as a step too far in the fight against road accidents.

Those opposed to the plans highlight the fact that the system does not report on inconsiderate driving, poor use of lanes or dangerous driving.

However this opposition is far less represented amongst young drivers who can see their premiums fall by up to 20% which can total hundreds of pounds.

The company who undertook the research commented “We feel confident that this will affect a change in behaviour, encouraging young drivers to take responsibility and drive safely. Drivers will also enjoy the fact they are judged on individual merit that is reported via the i-box.”
