Mercedes has revealed the new C-Class coupé which will be the flagship model in the company’s two-door coupé line-up when it goes on sale in July.

The new Mercedes C63 AMG coupé will be powered by the firm’s 6.2-litre hand-built V8 engine. But unlike the larger CLS63 and CL63, the new C-Class AMG will stick with the naturally aspirated engine which is currently being used in the C63 saloon and estate cars, rather than the new, smaller biturbo 5.5-litre engine. Delivering power at 451bhp and with 600Nm the new car will be able to sprint up from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, and the top speed will be limited at 155mph.

One interesting feature of the engine will be the ‘Controlled Efficienty mode’, which will be able to offer drivers a more frugal 23.5mpg with emissions coming out at 280g/km. Buyers will also be able to opt for an AMG performance package, which will add forged pistons, upgraded conrods, and the same lightweight crankshaft which you would find in the SLS supercar. Between them these additions increase the engines power up to 480bhp, which cuts 0.1 seconds from the 0-62mph acceleration time without changing the torque. In addition to the engine changes the performance package will also add composite brake discs clamped between red-painted calipers, and an extra flourish on the interior with an Alcantara wrapped sports sterring wheel.

For the transmission both of the models mentioned will come with the AMG Speedshift, a seven-spped automatic gearbox, as standard, and will also feature the same advanced rotary control for adjusting the transmission settings as the SLS. Launch control will also be included, and when put into the S+ mode gear changes are completed in a speedy 100ms.

A different suspension set-up, larger and more powerful brakes, and a sports steering system which has been specially calibrated will also set the new C-Class AMG coupé apart from the rest of the range.
On the inside the display dials will be similar to the CLS63 AMG, all of the safety equipment shared by the whole C-Class range, a sports steering wheel and sports seats with a variety of different choices for the upholstery.

And the exterior styling will get an overhaul too, with a new front bumper, new LED daytime running lights, and a distinctive aluminium bonnet with a pair of ‘powerdomes’. The AMG badges, lightweight alloys for the wheels, and a rear diffuser also feature on the new car.

Although the exact price which you will have to pay to get your hands on the new AMG has not been announced yet, the car is clearly going to be going up against the BMW M3 and the Audi RS5 coupés, which have starting prices of £54,545 and £58,685 respectively, so it is highly likely that the price will be somewhere within a similar price range to these other cars.
