The production of a new smaller version of Mercedes four door coupé, the recently updated CLS, has been confirmed by the company. The new junior model is to be aimed at attracting younger drivers to buy into the brand.

Building on recent upgrades to the CLS, Mercedes have now confirmed that they also plan to produce a smaller model, which will be the smallest coupé in their line up and which the company hope will appeal to younger buyers.

Taking design inspiration from both the CLS and also from the F800 Concept which was revealed at Geneva Motor Show last year, the new model will include the distinctive new upright grille which is Mercedes’ new family face and is likely to feature bold lines sweeping down the sides. Serving as a more practical replacement for the CLC, which is dropping out of production, the new CLS will fit in just below the recently revealed C-Class Coupé in the company’s line-up and is expected to go on sale in 2014.

There is little indication as of yet what the engine specs will be, but we do know that the basic engine will be supplied by Renault and that buyers are likely to be able to choose between a 1.4 or 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol unit, or a 1.6 litre diesel. But at the top of the range Mercedes will use their own 2.0 litre diesel, capable of delivering 170bhp, and the 2.2 litre diesel, capable 200bhp.

Whichever you choose, it will be underpinned by Mercedes’ new front wheel drive MFA platform, also to be seen in the future on the next-gen A and B-Class cars and a new small SUV. This will deliver power from the engine through a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed double-clutch automatic and since it was developed with an eye on alternative propulsion methods, it is more than likely that a hybrid model will also form part of the range.
