The Ford Mustang has galloped ahead of its high-performance sports coupe rivals in the race for UK sales.

Over 4,000 Ford Mustangs have found UK homes since the model was introduced in January 2015, with more than half of those coming during this current year. New figures show that with 2,317 sales so far in 2016, the Ford Mustang is comfortably outperforming its closest performance vehicle (250PS+) rival - the Jaguar F-Type - which has sold 1,446 units.

Here's the full Top 10 250PS+ Performance Vehicles (YTD July 2016):

  1. Ford Mustang (2,317)
  2. Jaguar F-Type (1,446)
  3. BMW 6 Series (1,367)
  4. Porsche 911 (1,315)
  5. Porsche Cayman (787)
  6. Audi TT (778)
  7. Porsche Boxster (526)
  8. Mercedes SL (489)
  9. Porsche 718 (482)
  10. BMW i8 (382)

Nearly two-thirds of Ford Mustang buyers have plumped for 5.0-litre V8 power, with the remainder choosing the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. Recent changes to the model have seen the introduction of Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system with redesigned eight-inch touchscreen, faster performance, and voice-controlled smartphone, audio, navigation, and climate functions. Meanwhile, three new paint colours were added to the range; Grabber Blue, Lightning Blue and White Platinum.
