Ferrari has finally been able to announce the name of their new Formula 1 car. After months of legal wrangling Ford have dropped their objections and the company is able to look ahead to the new racing season.
When Ferrari released their latest F1 challenger they thought the name they had chosen – F150 – was the perfect way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. But what they hadn’t banked on was Ford starting legal proceedings against them for infringing on the reputation of their F-150, a pick-up truck which they sell in the US.
Wanting to keep the homage to Italy’s 150 years as a unified country Ferrari have been forced through a series of name changes for their new F1 racer, first changing the name to 150th Italia and then refining that to 150° Italia.
Ford have accepted the new name and dropped their legal challenges, but Ferrari are still not happy about the whole affair, today releasing this angry sounding press release:
“It appears that this [the name F150] could have caused so much confusion in the minds of the consumer across the Pond that, at the same time as losing the F, the name will be completely Italianised, replacing the English “th” with the equivalent Italian symbol.
Therefore the name will now read as the Ferrari 150° Italia, which should make it clear even to the thickest of people that the name of the car is a tribute to the anniversary of the unification of our country.
Let’s hope the matter is now definitely closed and that we can concentrate on more serious matters, namely ensuring that our car that already seems to be pretty good out of the box, becomes a real winner.”
