More than a quarter of British drivers who take a motoring holiday on the continent do so without any additional checks or servicing to their vehicles.

Those were the findings of a web poll conducted by Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), who warn that drivers are risking expensive repair bills and ruined holidays by failing to prepare for their trip.
IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “A breakdown is inconvenient at the best of times, but to have that occur while on holiday is even more upsetting. Even with comprehensive travel insurance, there will be huge disruption to your holiday if you have a breakdown – and factoring in the extra expense of getting your car or bike back to the UK.”
“It is vital that your car or bike is in good condition to cope with the distances and demands of European driving. The roads will be unfamiliar so it is essential your brake pads, lights and tyre pressure levels are all in proper working order. Simply don’t leave yourself open to the risk of an unnecessary breakdown or even an accident.”
The IAM surveyed 1,335 motorists who have taken a European driving holiday in the past two years, or are considering doing so in the future.   Thankfully, despite the number of drivers who take their vehicles abroad without extra checks or servicing, the poll revealed the 85 per cent do travel will full breakdown and medical cover.  Despite the popularity of European motoring holidays some 78 per cent feel that motoring regulations on the continent have become increasingly confusing and complicated over recent years.
France remains the favoured destination for motoring holidays, emerging as the top choice for 43 per cent of respondents in the IAM study.
