The Government has announced stiffer penalties for drivers caught using a hand-held mobile phone at the wheel, a move which has been welcomed by road safety campaigners.

New guidelines will see the offence punished by a £200 fine and six penalty points.

Neil Worth of road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist hailed the announcement, saying: “We absolutely must create an environment where drivers take more responsibility for their actions. Research has made clear that talking on a hand-held mobile phone greatly increases someone’s risk of being involved in a crash.”

The organisation also called upon everyone to take responsibility for this aspect of road safety, asking that if you know you are speaking to someone who is driving while using a hand-held mobile device tell them to hang up and call back when it is safe.
