One of just 25 surviving MK1 Hillman Avenger Tiger’s will be up for grabs at Classic Car Auctions’ December Sale.
Part of a limited production run of only 200 cars, the right-hand drive, manual Mk 1 will go under the hammer at Warwickshire Business Centre on 2 December. The 1972 model has a 1500 GT engine under the bonnet and twin Weber carburettors, and its 92bhp output and agile handling made it a strong rival to Ford’s Escort Mexico.
Designed to showcase the capability of the Hillman Avenger range, the Tiger turned heads with its Sundance Yellow paintwork, matt black bonnet bulge, side stripes, rear spoiler, Lucas auxiliary lamps and Avenger Tiger decals. The previous owner has, over the past nine years, spent considerable time and money completing a full restoration of the front seats, headlining, carpets, and a mechanical overhaul including new Bilstein rear suspension, carburettors, brake pads, and battery. The original, extremely rare rev counter is not fitted but is included with the car, as are every tax disc and MOT certificate from new, the original bill of sale, and extensive history files.
MOT’d until June 2018, the Avenger Tiger has covered just a thousand miles since restoration, and its condition results in a sales estimate of £18-20,000.
Richard Greenhalgh of Classic Car Auctions says “This is an extremely rare car. So few of the Mk1s were made that it’s no surprise that today they are so sought after worldwide, and this particular example is one of the best documented Series 1 Tigers left”.
