A new study commissioned by KwikFit has revealed the impact Brexit has already had on UK motorists’ holiday plans.

Over 3 million people say their holiday plans have changed following the referendum  result, with half of those now planning to holiday in the UK instead of going abroad. The greatest impact has been on younger holidaymakers, with more than 880,000 people in the 18-34 age bracket switching to UK destinations, while the North East was the area affected most with almost one-on-six people who still plan to go on holiday this year now staying in the UK.

Economic factors are cited as the main reason, with almost 40% saying that travelling abroad is now more expensive, and nearly a third saying they want to holiday in the UK to support the economy.

More than half of those surveyed say they will be using their car for at least one holiday trip this year, the average distance being just over 1000 miles. Worryingly, 40% will do so without checking their tyre pressures and 60% without checking their tread depth. Only half will check their oil and screenwash levels, with even fewer checking coolant (39%) and brake fluid (33%).

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, says: “While the vote for Brexit has changed the holiday destination for many people, the nation’s cars are still going to be travelling millions of holiday miles this year. It’s therefore vital that motorists are as prepared as possible – there are some very easy checks to make which will help prevent a holiday coming to a premature halt, wherever people may be heading off to.”
