Audi, Amazon and DHL are set to trial a service which will allow for your Audi car boot to be your registered delivery address for your packages.

In a move that is going to use the latest technology from Audi's in-car communications system, Amazon/DHL delivery men will be able to access the car boot of compatible Audis to deliver their parcels.

The access will be granted via a unique digital access code which will then expire once the parcel is inside and the car boot is shut.

The service, which is being trialled in Munich, is expected to only be available to customers who subscribe to Amazon Prime, the company's premium membership package.

The point of this 'mobile mailbox' concept is obviously to reduce the amount of people who miss deliveries which is a frustrating experience for everyone involved, and whilst it may only be available to Audi owners (who don't mind someone having access to their boot), it is an interesting advancement.

The system is also expected to use GPS to track the whereabouts of your car for the delivery. We're unsure of how this will work and have had visions of the DHL man chasing people down the M6, but we're assuming customers will have to leave their car within a specified range for the alloted delivery time slot.

One great benefit of the service is that customers will be able to leave their car on their own drive, it will be very useful to someone who knows they won't be at home, but their car will. It will essentially allow them to get home deliveries without having to stay in all day, in fear of even getting in the shower, let alone walking the dog or picking up some milk from the corner shop.

It will give people the freedom to leave the house and return home, not to a 'Sorry, we missed you!' note, but to their package, safely stored in a large, secure, water-tight deposit box (boot), rather than chucked over the side gate!

An Audi Technical Development representative, Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, had this to say: "As with all of our connect services, the security of the car and of customer data has top priority for Audi. For us, Vorsprung durch Technik also means Audi customers should be able to use these kinds of innovative services with peace of mind and therefore enjoy true added value."

The more we think about it the more brilliant we think this is and we will of course keep you updated as we find out more information about the trials.
