Every Carsite car comes with a free HPI history check
Every one of Carsite's online vehicles has a full FREE HPI check, for your peace of mind. An HPI report examines a vehicle's status under all legal registers and will provide you with the complete history of your vehicle. HPI checks don't come particularly cheap: a check normally costs £19.99. However, since ALL Carsite vehicles come with an HPI car check for FREE, and an independent RAC inspection report that is viewable online within the car listing, you can buy cars with confidence without any extra expense.
The HPI history check helps to safeguard your transaction, and ensures that Carsite lists cars that have not been previously declared as:
- Stolen
- Written off
- Having Finance Outstanding
Using over 60 million identities recorded at the DVLA and DVLNI an HPI vehicle check also confirms:
- The identity of the vehicle
- How many individual owners it has had
- The plausibility of its mileage
- The true age of your vehicle, in terms of the year it was built and the date it was first registered at DVLA
Why have an HPI car history check?
According to HPI data, 1 in 3 used UK cars have something to hide. The free HPI checking that comes with every Carsite car helps to protect you in the following ways:
Vehicle theft
Statistics indicate that 1 in every 300 UK used cars have been stolen at some point. Every day HPI checks identify almost 30 stolen vehicles.
Previous damage
Out of every 100 vehicles checked, 4 have previously been written-off due to theft or damage.
Number plate changes
Out of every 100 cars checked, HPI data shows 15 have had a plate change at least once. A plate change may hide a car's past.
Outstanding finance
Out of every 100 vehicles checked by HPI, 24 still have car finance outstanding.
Inspection report
The HPI check will tell you if a vehicle is deemed as roadworthy in independent structural examination.
Mileage
Using around 85 million records from the National Mileage Register, an HPI check protects you against the “clocking” of used vehicles. Clocking is the practice of altering mileometers to indicate something lower than the true mileage.
Vehicle Registration Mark (VRM) and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
HPI will check VRM and VIN against DVLA and DVLNI records. If these don't match up, this is an indication that a vehicle may have been stolen.
Vehicle identity
An HPI report can confirm many details relating to vehicle identity, which can protect you from buying a vehicle that has had its true identity disguised- for example, a car may have been disguised as a different model.
Security Watch
The HPI Security Watch service is used to register UK cars that should not be sold. HPI can thus check your car against this list of 120,000 vehicles, helping make sure that it is a legitimate sale.
Valuation
An HPI Check helps you to find out the current UK market value of a vehicle, to check whether you're getting a good deal.
Document Check
HPI also check paperwork to see if it is legitimate.
Why Carsite uses HPI for checks on all of its vehicles:
Though there are other services for checking vehicle history in the UK, such as that provided by Experian & the AA, HPI have the longest standing reputation, having been checking used car histories since 1938, and are widely considered the authoritative source for UK vehicle history checks.

On Average*:
- 24% of cars have outstanding finance
- 4% have had a significant insurance claim for theft or damage
- 5% have had mileage discrepancy
- 15% have had a plate transfer
- 1 in 300 is registered as stolen.
Carsite works with HPI to ensure that these vehicles are not listed on our system.
