Volkswagen Beetle Overview
The current version of the Volkswagen Beetle is a huge improvement on the previous carnation. It boasts the same engine range as the Volkswagen Golf so there are both diesel and petrol engines to be chosen from. The 197bhp TSI petrol engine is expected to be the favourite of the range, capable of 60 mph in 7.5 seconds.
The Volkswagen Beetle has been popular throughout its lifespan and is often regarded as a “cult” car since it became fashionable to drive during the 1960’s hippy movement. It is more than a fashion statement however.
Background
The Volkswagen Beetle was originally produced in 1938 in order to provide a “people’s car” which could transport two adults and three children. Due to the second world war, proper production was held back until 1945.
During the 1950’s the Beetle began building its reputation as a more powerful and comfortable car than much of its competition and was an international best seller. 1974 saw the arrival of the Volkswagen Golf which succeeded the beetle.
A new Beetle model was then introduced in 1994 and put into production again in 1998 built on the Golf platform. This ‘New Beetle’ was produced until 2010 with a new model being introduced in 2012 which is built on the A5 (PQ35) platform along with the Volkswagen Jetta. There is also a special edition version of the A5 Beetle known as the Black Turbo launch edition.
Summary
Despite stiff competition, the VW Beetle unique looks and dynamic personality will make it a favourite among many buyers. It doesn’t hurt that the car offers a good specification and respectable performance.
