Subaru Forester Overview

The only thing that was missing in previous years with the Forester was a diesel engine option. With the latest incarnation however, a 2.0 litre diesel powered engine was introduced. Depending on the engine the Forester can be capable of 45.0 mpg.

The Forester’s exterior design looks tough and rugged yet the inside maintains the proportions of a family estate. There are definite signs that the Forester has been designed with off-road capabilities, such as the large headlamps, roof rails and extra space in the wheel arches.

Background

The original Forester launched in 1997 and enjoyed a loyal following among farmers and tradesmen. In 2002 a makeover made it more enticing to the 4x4 crowd.

The first generation model (1997-2002) was built on the popular Impreza platform and was placed in between the Impreza and the Legacy in terms of size and price. It was replaced by the second generation model in 2002 which was again based on an Impreza platform. It initially achieved a four star rating according to ANCAP’s safety test, but after an update in 2005, this was improved upon to a five star safety rating.

The third generation model arrived in 2008 and has since received a facelift in 2011, the facelift consisted of a new rear spoiler for the XT model, and a new grill.

Subaru’s interior quality has improved quite a bit in recent years. More recent Forester models boast much higher levels of comfort than past models. Rear seats fold completely flat and collapse for added versatility.

Summary

The Subaru Forester is a decent all rounder which can perform both on and off-road. It’s a versatile vehicle which offers a good set of engines with the newer models.
