In comparison with other cars in its range the Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI is head and shoulders above its rivals when it comes to value for money. Skoda’s excellent reputation for customer care also makes it an attractive option. Skoda provides many features as standard such as climate control and electric windows.

If you want to save money and the environment the Skoda Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI should be top of your list.

PROS:  The Octavia is one the most economical hatchbacks on the market. Its low emissions of 99g/km, along with impressive fuel economy of 74.3mpg make it a great choice for a family on a budget.

CONS:  As you might expect for a car in its price range the Octavia is not the sportiest option. Its size and lack of power mean it comes up short when you compare it to some other hatchbacks.

Behind the Wheel

This 1.6 TDI has a top speed of just 119mph. the acceleration is also underwhelming reaching 62mph in 11.4 seconds. Compared to its competitors in the market the Skoda does not compare well. The similarly sized Vauxhall Insignia is capable of reaching 137mph.

When it comes to handling, the Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI has plenty of grip. However it can be a little slow to respond. It is one of the most spacious cars in its class with plenty of space and comfort for a whole family. The ride quality is also impressive and it is surprisingly quiet even at higher speeds

Looks & Equipment

Like most Skodas, the Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI is not going to win any prizes for styling. It looks a little bulky and boxy, similar to the Toyota Avensis. But if you happen to be in the market for a family sized hatchback, looks are not going to be your number one priority.

What it lacks in looks it makes up in size and comfort. There is plenty of room for five full sized adults. The back seats also flip forward to create a vast loading area. Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, air conditioning, central locking and electric front windows. Satnav, MP3 connectivity and rear parking sensors are available as optional extras.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Octavia achieved four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Twin and side airbags come as standard along with ISOFIX child seat mounts and electronic brake force distribution. Other cars in the Octavia's price range scored higher in the crash tests - the new Ford Focus and the Peugeot 308 achieved the full five stars.

Skoda has a famous reputation for customer care, although its high level of reliability should mean few visits to the dealer. The Octavia has a three year 60,000 mile warranty which is standard for cars in this class.

As you might expect from a large family car the Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI has impressive boot space. There is plenty of space for the shopping as well as a lot of room left over.

Value for Money

The Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI is cheaper to run than any of the rivals in it class. Its fuel economy means you will be making fewer fuel stops, saving you money. It is available from just £17,875 which is roughly comparable to the cheapest Mondeo and Insignia, however neither of these cars can boast running costs as low as the Greenline.

When you factor in the free road tax that this car incurs, combined with the excellent fuel economy, the Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI is fantastic value for money. The low purchase price and the fact that the car is in insurance group 15 means that, cost-wise, the Octavia Greenline 1.6 TDI is in a class of its own.
