The Proton Satria Neo 1.6 GSX is the pick of the range, purely because it is the cheapest. However, there are cars out there for the same money which offer better handling, better build quality and superior performance.

PROS:  The Satria Neo is well equipped and offers fairly good handling.

CONS:  It's not particularly cheap, badly made, not very economical, not very practical and extremely noisy.

Behind the Wheel

The Satria Neo's 1.6-litre petrol engine does a fairly decent job of moving it around, developing 111bhp and 109lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes a fairly respectable 11.5 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 118mph.

The Proton handles surprisingly well with a good amount of grip though the corners and good body control. The ride is also surprisingly composed, except at low speeds.

However, it is very noisy indeed. The engine sounds very harsh and noise from the road and wind both intrude significantly at higher speeds. This can become very tiresome on longer journeys.

Looks & Equipment

It's not a particularly bad looking car but at a time when Hyundai and Kia are upping their game and producing very good looking cars indeed, Proton is struggling to keep up. The interior is relatively stylish but the quality of the interior plastics beggars belief.

Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric front windows, rear parking sensors and a CD player.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Safety kit provided in the Satria Neo 1.6 GSX is short in supply. It comes with driver and passenger front airbags, but side and curtain airbags are not available, not even as optional extras. All Satrias come with an alarm and immobiliser, but not deadlocks.

The biggest concern in the Proton Satria is the lack of front headroom caused by the steeply raked windscreen. It is so tiny that even short drivers will feel claustrophobic, while six-footers will really struggle. Head and legroom are in short supply in the back, too. The boot offers 268-litres of space with the rear seats up and 615-litres with the rear seats down.

There is still a question mark over reliability but the Satria Neo comes with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty as standard.

Value for Money

Proton may unashamedly a budget brand, but prices for the Satria Neo aren't as low as the potential buyers might think and resale values will be very poor.

The Satria Neo 1.6 GSX 3dr costs £8,495 and is not particularly economical, returning a combined 42.8mpg and emitting 157g/km of CO2, putting under VED band G.

If it's cheap motoring you're looking for, there are better cars around for roughly the same outlay. Even a second hand car is going to be a better bet than this Proton.
