An entry-level budget family car, the Myvi Sport+ SXi offers a reasonable amount of driving kit for its low price. However, lacking the advanced features of some of its rivals and failing to deliver many improvements from the more basic Myvi Lux model, the car's price could still be considered unjustified with cheaper options available.

PROS:  Low insurance premiums and road tax costs make the Myvi Sport+ SXi an economical and affordable car to drive. Top speeds and acceleration figures are reasonable for a small family hatchback and the addition of a part-leather interior distinguishes this model from the Myvi Lux.

CONS:  Standard features are still lacking considering the higher price when compared to the Myvi Lux and there are no other benefits in terms of efficiency or performance. This makes the additional £1,500 unjustified when purchasing this model.

Behind the Wheel

The Myvi Sport+ SXi 5dr is equipped with an 86 bhp, 1.3-litre petrol engine that delivers punchy performance around the town and allows the driver to effortlessly keep pace with faster traffic.

Top speeds and acceleration figures are reasonable for a car of this class, reaching a maximum of 106 mph and accelerating from 0-62 mph in 11.3 seconds.

With well-laid out and easy to use controls and a simple dashboard, the Sport+ SXi comes fully equipped with seat that allows plenty of movement for passengers. However, the steering wheel lacks reach adjustment which means comfort can be compromised for some drivers.

Looks & Equipment

The long list of on-board equipment includes air-conditioning, front and rear electric windows, remote central locking, a CD player, metallic paint and electric door mirrors all as standard features. The Sport+ SXi also comes with alloy wheels as standard but these are not rated highly amongst drivers.

The Perodua is quite responsive and predictable but steering is a bit too light, making control lacking at times.

Engine and wind noise build up at motorway speeds, potentially causing disruption to drivers. This ultimately makes the Perodua fall short of its rivals which offer a far quieter drive.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Considering the size of the Sport+ SXi there's a lot of room in the cabin providing passengers with plenty of headroom in this tall-bodied car. Plush leather/Alcantara seats are fitted as standard and enhance the comfort of the vehicle. Unfortunately they are one of the only improvements the car has over the standard Myvi Lux - with boot capacities, performance and in-car technology remaining the same.

Unfortunately, the safety features also remain the same - making the Myvi range fall behind its rivals. Twin front airbags are fitted as standard but there is no side or curtain airbags which when coupled with the absence of stability control make for a less than secure drive. Central remote locking is a standard feature but there is no trace of deadlocks to discourage smash-and-grab criminals, thus leaving the car vulnerable to thieves.

Value for Money

Priced at just £8, 299 there is no doubt that the Myvi Sport+ SXi is inexpensive. Yet, whilst the level of in-car tech is still reasonable for the price the cheaper Myvi Lux offers many of the same features with a purchase price which is £1,500 lower.

Running costs are also the same with both models falling into tax bracket E and insurance group 15 thanks to fairly low carbon emission of 137 g/km and fuel efficiency of 48.7 mpg.

Alongside the similarities between the Myvi Sport+ SXi and the Myvi Lux there are also plenty of rival car models which offer superior performance for similar prices.

Whilst a fairly decent car for its class, the lack of safety features or theft deterrents are a severe disadvantage and competition from rival manufacturers means the Myvi range struggles to keep up.
