Mercedes-Benz GL Class Overview

The Mercedes GL-Class provides a smooth ride due largely to its competent air suspension system. The car’s steering is precise, although lacking a little in feedback, and makes for an enjoyable drive both on- and off-road.

However, the GL-Class is expensive to purchase. The extra options can quickly add up and increase an already high purchase price. The diesel engine option will offer some relief in the form of fuel savings.

The current model sports a 7-speed transmission and a V8 engine available as a 3 litre, 4 litre, 4.7 litre or 5.5 litre.

Background

The Mercedes GL-Class was first produced in 2006.

The model was originally set to be a replacement for the 25-year-old Mercedes G-Class, but decided to keep both models in production after considering the desires of the Mercedes faithful.

The GL-Class came with a good set of standard equipment, including air conditioning with dual-zone climate controls, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 6-CD changer.

Optional features included leather upholstery, a navigation system and heated rear seats. These were all standard on the Mercedes GL550.

Summary

The Mercedes GL-Class is an excellent 4x4 that provides a spacious interior with room for 7 passengers, and delivers an enjoyable drive both on- and off-road. The car makes for a great family vehicle.
