Mazda 3 Overview

The interior is well designed and looks very neat, with space for luggage and good head and legroom for passengers. The car has easy-to-use internal controls, although some of the materials used inside could be better.

The 3 makes for a smooth drive, especially at faster speeds, with very light and responsive steering. The car has good grip and a very sporty feel about it. As with many Mazdas, the 3 represents good value for money and has excellent fuel economy.

The European model includes the i-stop feature for the 2.0L diesel engine. This feature stops the engine each time the car comes to a complete stop, and quickly starts up again without the need of a starter when the vehicle proceeds. It is set to increase fuel economy by 12%.

Background

The Mazda3 was produced in its first generation from 2004 until 2009. The model was available as a 5-door hatchback and as 4-door saloon. There was a choice of two different trims, and a wide range of engines and transmissions. The 2.3 litre engine enabled the car to top out at 118mph.

In 2007 the model received a facelift with some interior and exterior changes. The trims were updated and the car was available in several new colours.

2009 saw the release of the second generation Mazda3. The new model is slightly larger both in length and width than its predecessor, and is also lighter. It is available with a larger 2.5 litre engine, and is faster than the first generation.

Changes occurred to the features and options of the Mazda3 midway through 2010. Features such as Side mirrors with integrated turn signals, footwell lighting, and power seat memory functions were removed.

Summary

The Mazda3 is a brilliant family car that is affordable, cheap to run and easy to drive. It is spacious inside and very versatile, making it ideal for a small family.
