The Hyundai i40 1.7 CRDi (136ps) Premium Auto 4dr is comfortable, spacious and well equipped. However, the standard equipment comes at a price and this is very expensive for an i40 - you can get a good mid-range Mondeo for this price.

PROS:  Economical, good looking, well equipped

CONS:  Pricey for a Hyundai - the cheaper models make more financial sense

Behind the Wheel

The i40's 1.7-litre diesel engine churns out 134bhp and 240lb-ft of torque, allowing the car to accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 124mph which is perfectly adequate for a family car such as this.

It's not exactly fun to drive thanks to a jiggly ride and lifeless steering but it gets the job done. The problem is that there are many cars in this market sector that get the job done and offer a whole lot more besides. A Mondeo or an Insignia is going to be much more fun to drive.

Looks & Equipment

The i40 is a good looking car thanks to sleek, modern lines and an attractive front end. The cabin is also very nice; there is no sign of cheap plastics and the whole thing feels screwed together very well. A quality product.

You get an impressive list of standard equipment including alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows and mirrors, an electric sunroof, cruise control, rear parking sensors, leather seats, sat-nav, Bluetooth, CD player and MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Four adults will be comfortbale in the i40 thanks to a good amount of headroom and legroom within the cabin. The boot is also a very generous size, offering 525-litres of space with the rear seats folded up.

The i40 should also be very safe and achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests thanks to a number of airbags and driver aids.

Reliability shouldn't be an issue. Hyundai build their cars very well and the i40 is supplied with Hyundai's five year/unlimited mileage warranty as standard.

Value for Money

At £24,895, the i40 1.7 CRDi (136ps) is pretty pricey for a Hyundai and many buyers are going to be temped by the offerings from Ford and Vauxhall. However, to compensate you do get a lot of standard equipment and the car should be cheap to run.

You should get 55.4mpg on the combined cycle which is very good and CO2 emissions of 159g/km put the car under VED band G which is a bit high for a car like this, but relatively inexpensive. Group 17 insurance is also perfectly reasonable.
