CarSite Verdict:  3/5
The i40 is not a bad car by any means but it is comprehensively outclassed in this market sector. For cheap, reliable family transport it's perfectly adequate but there are better cars out there.

PROS:  Good looking, spacious, cheap

CONS:  Not as economical as the diesel version, no fun to drive

Behind the Wheel

The i40's 1.6-litre petrol engine develops 133bhp and 121lb-ft of torque. This means 0-62mph takes 11.6 seconds and flat out you'll be going 121mph. It's hardly a thrilling drive but it does everything you expect of a family saloon with ease.

However, the ride is a little harsh and the steering inspires absolutely no confidence in the driver. It's not bad, it's just nowhere near as good as its European rivals.

Looks & Equipment

The i40 is a fine looking car. Gone are the days when Hyundais looked like ugly facsimiles of previous generation European cars. The i40's lines are sleek and the whole car looks very contemporary.

The cabin also feels well put together and the plastics feel high quality.

In terms of standard equipment, the i40 comes with alloy wheels, air-con, electric windows, Bluetooth and a CD player with MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Reliability shouldn't be an issue as Hyundai have a very good reputation for producing reliable cars and the i40 is supplied with a five year unlimited mileage warranty.

The i40 should also be very safe and achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

There is also plenty of space in the i40, both in the cabin and the boot. The boot offers an impressive 525-litres.

Value for Money

At £17,395 the i40 1.6 GDi is very reasonably priced. The fuel economy is also fairly good at a combined 47.1mpg but the diesel models offer dramatically improved efficiency and are a much better bet. CO2 emissions of 140g/km are quite low and mean that the i40 falls under VED band E which is reasonable for a car of this type. The i40 will also be very cheap to insure, falling under insurance group 13.
