The ideal city car, those looking for a stylish vehicle which copes well on the open road and in congested traffic are sure to be fans of the Fiat Panda 1.2 MyLife. This is the mid-spec model in the Panda range and although the level of standard kit is disappointing, the Panda offers everything the motorist needs for cheap and cheerful city motoring.

PROS:  Low running costs, decent performance, good practicality, chic looks

CONS:  Disappointing amount of standard kit, acceleration is mediocre

Behind the Wheel

With 69 bhp and 75 lb-ft of torque, the 1.2 Panda packs a fair punch for a city car. The 1.2 litre engine is the replacement for the old 1.1, and offers an extra 9 bhp to give city dwellers a little extra oomph on the road.

Acceleration is unfortunately a little on the slow side but, as a city car, this is unlikely to have a huge impact on drivers. The car manages 0-62mph in 13.4 seconds and a top speed of 101 mph means it's more than capable of the odd motorway blast.

Looks & Equipment

The interior of the Panda has been improved. It is stylish and well put together but a couple of the interior plastics are a little sub-standard in terms of quality. However, this is to be expected in a car as cheap as the Panda.

Standard equipment for the Panda is also a little lacking when compared to other city cars but then this is also reflected in the low purchase price. While you get power steering, central locking, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric front windows and a CD player, MP3 connectivity is not available and an electric sunroof will cost you £720.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Inside the cabin the driving position is fairly high which some drivers may find uncomfortable. Seating space is also a little restricted and rear passengers in particular will suffer from cramped leg room.

The boot is also a little on the small side with a mere 206 litre capacity with the seats up. Folding the seats down expands this to 861 litres which is a vast improvement but still fails to match some rival city cars.

Safety levels are impressive and the Panda is equipped with driver and passenger airbags as standard. Unfortunately, front side airbags are not available and there is no standard fitted stability control to improve safety levels. Despite these limitations the Panda scored fairly well on the NCAP crash tests, achieving a four star rating for overall safety.

The car is also fairly reliable, with a high quality build and very few reported issues. A three year warranty is offered with this car for 60,000 miles to give drivers additional peace of mind.

Value for Money

Priced at just £9,255 the Panda 1.2 MyLife is cheap and cheerful motoring.

Pitched as a city car, the crowning achievement of the Panda is its impressive fuel economy of 57.6mpg and low carbon emissions of 113g/km. Low running costs are further helped by the low insurance costs (falling under insurance bracket 5) to offer a small vehicle which is great value for money.

Overall, this is a great car for those looking for an agile and affordable city vehicle.
