An efficient car which is cheap to keep on the road, the Citroen Nemo Multispace 1.3 HDi Stop and Start 5dr is a great option for families looking for a cheap MPV. The Nemo is extremely slow but if it's cheap practical wheels you're looking for, the Nemo offers unrivalled practicality for the price.

PROS:  Safe, practical, fuel efficient and green

CONS:  Slow, ugly, basic level of standard equipment

Behind the Wheel

The engine delivers a maximum power output of 75 bhp and 140 lb-ft of torque and is perfect for city driving – feeling faster than the power credentials suggest. However, once outside of the city, the Nemo struggles. 0-62mph takes 16.6 seconds and you'll be out of puff at 96mph. This is not a fast car.

Grip on the road is strong however and the steering is fluid. There is some body movement in bends and corners which can be uncomfortable but other than that the ride is relatively smooth. The suspension does a good job of absorbing bumps in the road and this means the drivers and passengers are kept as comfortable as possible.

The gearbox takes a bit of getting used to but noise from the wind and road is barely audible and the diesel engine is surprisingly quiet.

Looks & Equipment

The Nemo Multispace is van, make no mistake. You won't be turning any heads behind the wheel.

Basics such as power steering, central locking, stability control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and a CD player are all standard fittings.

For those concerned about aesthetics, alloy wheels will set you back £360 with a metallic paint finish priced at £440. Leather seats are unavailable. Cruise control costs £170 and rear parking sensors cost £210. Bluetooth connectivity costs an additional £180 but there is no option for MP3 connectivity with the stereo, and a built-in sat nav is also not offered. Air conditioning will set you back £535.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The quality of the build is high in this model and this means that reliability should not be an issue.

The internal appearance lacks a little style but this is made up for by the quality of the materials which feel sturdy and resilient – perfect for those with small children. A three year warranty is provided for 60,000 miles and it is recommended that the car is serviced every 20,000 miles – meaning maintenance costs should be fairly low.

The boot capacity is decent for a large family car and even with the seats up the model boasts an impressive 356 litre capacity. With the seats down this increases to 2,500 litres.

In terms of safety, the model only scored an average three stars in the NCAP crash tests for overall safety. Driver, passenger and front side airbags are fitted as standard and the car is fitted with an immobiliser to protect it from theft. The Nemo lacks an alarm option, however.

Value for Money

Priced at £12,445, the Nemo Multispace HDi Stop & Start is remarkable value for money considering the sheer amount of car that you're getting.

Resale values should also be pretty strong.

The efficiency of the model which is offered thanks to its standard Start/Stop system means that an impressive fuel economy of 65.7 mpg can be achieved. Low road tax costs (under tax band C) and low insurance premiums (under insurance bracket 7) means this is a wise investment for the money-conscious motorist.
