The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ is an excellent family car. Its futuristic design and above average performance make it a tempting choice but other models in the range offer a better all-round package.

PROS:  The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ boasts a family-friendly cabin that is cleverly-designed, stylish and airy. It has a good level of standard equipment and boasts a number of innovative storage solutions. The engine is very frugal and CO2 emissions are low.

CONS:  At £20,350 the Picasso is not exactly cheap. The EGS gearbox is a bit jerky and ride quality and driving dynamics are sub-par. Depreciation is steep.

Behind the Wheel

The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+'s ride is supple, becoming unsettled on only the bumpiest roads. Its steering is responsive despite the car's heavy weight. There is too much body roll through corners although this is to be expected of an MPV. Although competent, the Picasso is no fun to drive.

The Picasso accelerates from 0-62 mph in 13.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 113 mph. Its 1.6-litre diesel engine produces 110bhp and 210 lb-ft of torque low down the rev range.

The diesel engine is refined, with very little engine noise making its way into the cabin. Wind noise is also unobtrusive but suspension and road noise can be heard in the cabin. The 6-speed electronic gearbox is slow and jerky in automatic mode. The panoramic windscreen and thin A pillars offer great visibility.

Looks & Equipment

The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ 5dr offers ample space for five people. The interior is fitted with quality soft-touch plastics and its style is unique and commendable. With a fixed-hub steering wheel, the C4 Picasso’s dashboard is unconventional but intuitive.

The VTR+ comes well-equipped with electric front windows, air-conditioning, cruise control, electric front windows, electric heated door mirrors, electronic stability program, trip computer, alloy wheels, electric rear windows, leather steering wheel and front foglights. Metallic paint will cost you an extra £450 and climate control an extra £465.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ can comfortably accomodate five adults and their luggage. The boot can hold 500 litres but, when the rear seats are moved or folded flat, the capacity increases to 1734 litres. There is plenty of storage space in the cabin too. The seats are comfortable and flexible with the rear seats reclining and sliding for the best possible position. The driver’s seat is highly adjustable for more comfort.

The Citroen C4 Picasso is very safe with EBD, ESP, ABS and traction control all fitted as standard. The Picasso comes with seven airbags and four Isofix child-seat mountings. The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP tests.

Remote and central locking and an engine immobilizer are included as standard.

Although Citroen have a mediocre reputation for reliability, recent models have been much more dependable and the C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ should prove to be a reliable car.

Value for Money

The C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ is a bit cheaper than its rivals although will likely suffer from heavy depreciation. Priced at £20,350, the value of the Picasso is likely to fall to £11,854 after a year and £7,868 after three.

The car falls under insurance group 14 and Road Tax Band E. With CO2 emissions of 132g/km and a combined 56.5mpg, the Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ 5dr is a fuel-efficient and environmental-friendly MPV.
