Caterham CSR Car Reviews

Although the CSR looks just like a slightly updated Seven, it actually features a new engine, chassis and suspension system. The 2.3 litre Cosworth engine is fast enough to rival supercars from a standing stand. Available with two levels of tune, either 200bhp or 260bhp, both fly to 60mph in under 4 seconds whilst the 260bhp version then happily keeps accelerating to 160mph.

Caterham CSR 260 2dr - April 2012
The Caterham CSR 260 isn’t really much of a road car, offering very little in terms of practicality beyond having two seats and an engine, but oh what an engine it is. Acceleration and speed is su...

Caterham CSR Overview

The handling is excellent, as has always been the case with Caterhams, although the steering is a little heavier than in past. For agility and responsiveness the CSR will again rival supercars, for a fraction of the price.

Inside, the CSR doesn’t have the flat dashboard of the Seven, but a tubular dash that is well styled with easy to read dials. The hood does well at keeping the rain out of the cabin but it is a hassle to erect, and it should not be considered suitable for everyday use. There is also very little space and it isn’t the most comfortable to drive long distances, giving it limited practicality.

Background

The CSR was released in 2005 and although it is based largely on the Seven, it is larger, with a stiffer chassis. It also features a revised independent rear suspension system.

Summary

This Caterham is not your everyday car. It is built to offer a unique driving experience, and puts this far above practicality and comfort. For those looking for a Sunday car or track-day thriller, the CSR may be the perfect option.
