Audi S6 Overview
The S6 is available as a saloon or an estate (Avant).
Under the bonnet you get a 4.0-litre V8 engine which sends 414bhp directly to the front wheels. Even the slightest press on the loud pedal sends you shooting forward at an alarming rate -- the S6 delivers impressive performance in any gear, and at any engine speed.
Through the bends, however, the S6 isn't as impressive. There's plenty of grip but both the steering and brakes feel mushy and disconnected.
On the plus side, the S6 is a very competent and comfortable cruiser; the miles just seem to fly by and this means that the S6 is likely to curry favour with those who rack up ultra-high mileages.
Background
The Audi A6, on which the S6 is based, was introduced in 1994 to replace the ageing 100 model. Since then, it has been produced in four generations: from 1994 to 1997, 1997 to 2004, 2004 to 2011, and 2011 to present.
Each of these models has been offered as a high-performance S6 variant. The first model had a 4.2-litre V8, the second a 4.2-litre V8, the third a 5.2-litre V10 and the fourth and current model a 4.0-litre V8.
Summary
The S6 is a fine car; however, it lacks zest and feels surprisingly anodyne to drive. Compared to the S7, to which it is mechanically identical, the S6 offers good value; however, the standard A6 is just as competent and, if you're just looking for a cruiser, our money would be on that.
